The COL5A1 gene provides instructions for making a component of type V collagen. Collagens are a family of proteins that strengthen and support many tissues in the body, including skin, ligaments, bones, tendons, and muscles. The COL5A1 gene determines muscle fiber diameter within tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissue.

The C-allele in this gene is protective and indicates a greater, range of motion (ROM).

The T-allele indicates an increased risk for soft tissue injury.
