HMOX1

The HMOX1 gene encodes the hemeoxygenase enzyme that has both an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory function. This enzyme is considered to be the main protein in diseases arising as a result of oxidative and inflammatory insults. The TT genotype has low HMOX1 activity, thus offering little anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory protection.

The low activity of HMOX1 with this result may impair:

• Anti-inflammatory response

• Antioxidant defense

• Formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis)

• Mitochondrial function

• Red blood cell production (erythropoiesis)

• Regulation of cell multiplication (proliferation)

• Regulation of innate and adaptive immunity

• Wound healing

• Iron homeostasis

The TT-allele is considered the risk allele and has been associated with 'leaky GUT' and inflammation of the intestinal tract. If you carry this genotype it is a good idea to add in more nutrient cofactors such as curcumin, omega 3, and resveratrol to upregulate its expression.
