The NrF2 gene encodes is a basic leucine zipper protein that regulates the expression of antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.
This gene is responsible for respiratory capacity and the rate of energy production during exercise. This protein is also important in the formation of new mitochondria: the ‘powerhouse’ of the cell where energy is produced.
The A-genotype is considered the risk allele in this gene. A ketogenic or mito-food plan is very well suited to support the functioning of this pathway.
