This gene encodes the enzyme responsible for protecting LDL and HDL from oxidation. Low PON activity has been associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease.

Following synthesis in the kidney and liver, the enzyme is secreted into the circulation, where it binds to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles and hydrolyzes thiolactones and xenobiotics, including paraoxon, a metabolite of the insecticide parathion. Variations in this gene may be associated with coronary artery disease and diabetic retinopathy.

If you carry the G-allele status in this gene, you may present with lower PON1 activity and reduced concentration. This genetic variation has been associated with CHD, atherosclerosis, diabetes, oxidized lipoproteins, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome. A diet high in antioxidants and phytonutrients will support a balanced PON activity.
