The SHMT1 gene encodes serine hydroxymethyltransferase which is a vitamin B6 dependent enzyme that plays an important role in the folate cycle in the methylation pathway.
The T allele in the SHMT1 gene was associated with an increased cardiovascular risk when associated with the T allele in the MTHFR gene so it is important for you to take a poly-genetic view when determining your genotype.
Vitamin B6 is a cofactor for SHMT which converts THF to MeTHF which is, in turn, converted into MTHF by the enzyme MTHFR. Vitamin B6 binds with SHMT and allows it to function optimally, when present in low levels SHMT activity is reduced.
